What is PhotoRejuvenation (Laser resurfacing)?
PhotoRejuvenation is a series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), which are non-invasive treatments that improve the appearance of Rosacea, flushing, broken capillaries, sun damaged skin, age and sun spots, skin texture, and photo aging. Treatment also improves mild acne scars, reduces large pores, can improve dark circles around the eyes, and reduces fine lines. Treatments are especially effective for improving the appearance of the face, neck, chest, and hands. This exciting treatment involves little or no "down time". You can resume normal activities immediately.
Am I a PhotoRejuvenation Candidate?
In many cases, facial wrinkles form in localized areas, such as near the eyes or around the mouth. The laser can be precisely controlled so that only these specific areas are targeted.
Patients with olive skin, brown skin or black skin may be at increased risk for pigmentation changes no matter what type of resurfacing method is recommended. Also, individuals who have taken acutane in the past 12-18 months or are prone to abnormal (keloid-like) scarring or those with active skin infections on the treatment area may not be appropriate candidates for this procedure.
Remember, having laser resurfacing can help enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it won't completely remove all facial flaws or prevent you from aging. Lines that occur as a result of natural movements of the face - smiling, squinting, blinking, talking, chewing - will inevitably recur. Other treatments such as light chemical peels, medicated facial creams or botox can help with these areas.
How does the treatment work?
An intense light is applied in a series of gentle pulses over the treatment area. Without damaging the skin, the light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels or pigmentation. The heat causes damage to the vessel or lesion, and the body begins its natural healing process. The pigmented lesion will darken before it flakes off and disappears, or the blood vessel will shrink and also disappear. Treatment can be given as frequently as every two to three weeks.
How many treatments will I need?
For optimal results, a series of 3 to 5 treatments are recommended. Follow-up treatments may be desired once a year to maintain results.
